This training has been completely revamped and will be launched in 2026 as a modern e-learning course. This online program offers you the opportunity to learn, at your own pace and at a flexible time, using professional observation techniques used in both private and public investigative practices.
In this approximately 14-hour self-study course, you'll learn step-by-step how to effectively prepare, conduct, and record observations. The e-learning combines theoretical knowledge, practical video lessons, and interactive assignments developed by experienced observation specialists.
You'll learn how to observe discreetly in a variety of situations—from urban to rural areas—and how to professionally analyze and report signals, behaviors, and patterns.
During this training, you will learn the latest strategies and techniques for dynamic and static surveillance in both urban and woodland areas. Tactical surveillance is among the most complex methods of intelligence gathering.
The training is divided into three modules:
Module 1: Dynamic and Static Observation
In this module, you'll learn all about tracking a person by vehicle, on foot, or by public transport. Planning, preparing, and establishing a static observation post are also covered.
Module 2: Preparing Dynamic Observations and ABC Procedures
In this module, we emphasize the importance of discretion during observations to avoid attracting attention. You'll learn the do's and don'ts of conducting observations. You'll also practice ABC procedures for dynamically monitoring subjects.
Module 3: Recording
In this module, our instructors will teach you how to capture activities or events in photos, videos, or audio recordings.
Upon registration, you will receive the official Observation Techniques manual (ISBN 9789464375060), which we developed in-house and will send to you by mail. This manual is a valuable addition to the online learning environment.
Overview of Observation Technique components:
Part 1: General observation
Part 2: Radio Procedure
Part 3: Materials
Part 4: Static observation
Part 5: Observation on foot
Part 6: Mobile surveillance
Part 7: National observations
Part 8: Recording / reporting

Great training!
Education: Observation Techniques
Review: “It was another three fantastic days. Theory: I learned a lot and went home with even more experience. The theory is manageable. The course material was clear, and the lessons and learning materials were interspersed with videos and practical examples. The instructor's practical experience well-supported the objectives of this course. There was ample opportunity to discuss your own input and complete exam preparation assignments with your group. Practical: Thanks in part to the instructor's enthusiasm, she captivated the small group of three, and we went home with the certificate. I found the live practical application of Observation Techniques to be exceptional. Applying what I've learned in a relatively short time in the real world is a bit unfamiliar. Thanks to good and trustworthy guidance, you overcome this and quickly get into your role. The instructor has a good sense of the student's thoughts and what stage they are in. This gave me a good feeling, and we were able to gain practical experience in a safe environment. The final practical exam with an external actress was a fantastic experience.” Facilities: Once again, everything was well organized. Materials to support the lessons were available, lunch was plentiful, and a timely cup of coffee was a welcome relief. IACA, thank you on behalf of an enthusiastic student
